Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli: traveler's diarrhea comes home.

The article in this issue of Clinical Infectious Diseases by Beatty et al. [1] on an outbreak of diarrhea due to enterotoxi-genic Escherichia coli (ETEC) further documents the emergence of ETEC as a significant diarrheal pathogen in the United States. The main contribution of the article by Beatty and colleagues is that it describes one of the largest foodborne outbreaks ever reported in the Un...

Diarrhoea in children due to enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli.

Two hundred and ten cases of diarrhoea were investigated for enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli. Sixty eight (32.4%) yielded ETEC strains, out of which fifty seven (27.0%) were LT producers and six (2.9%) were ST producers. Drug sensitivity pattern indicate the effectiveness of gentamicine, streptomycin and chloramphenicol at a higher rate. (JPMA 36: 82, 1986).

Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli and Vibrio cholerae Diarrhea, Bangladesh, 2004

Flooding in Dhaka in July 2004 caused epidemics of diarrhea. Enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) was almost as prevalent as Vibrio cholerae O1 in diarrheal stools. ETEC that produced heat-stable enterotoxin alone was most prevalent, and 78% of strains had colonization factors. Like V. cholerae O1, ETEC can cause epidemic diarrhea.

Serologic correlates of protection against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli diarrhea.

BACKGROUND We conducted a nested case-control study in 397 rural Egyptian children <36 months of age to assess the correlation between serum levels of antibodies against toxin and colonization factors (CFs) and the risk of homologous enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) diarrhea. METHODS Active case detection was performed via semiweekly home visits, and blood was obtained at 3-month inter...

Genotypic characterization of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli strains causing traveler's diarrhea.

This study aims to characterize the presence of virulence factors of enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) causing traveler's diarrhea. Among 52 ETEC isolates, the most common toxin type was STh, and the most frequent colonization factors (CFs) were CS21, CS6, and CS3. On the other hand, the nonclassical virulence factors EAST1 and EatA were frequently present.
